REBEKAH FORTUNE BIO

Rebekah began her career as an actress, training at the Central School of Speech and Drama whereshe earned a BA in Acting and an MA in Classical Theatre. She toured extensively with her owntheatre company, Negativequity, before moving into filmmaking.

An openly autistic filmmaker, Rebekah founded Seahorse Films to develop a bold slate of projects that combine creativity with commerciality, while actively championing greater opportunities for women and disabled artists both in front of and behind the camera.

Her debut feature, Just Charlie (2017), was released to critical acclaim, winning the Audience Award at Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Cannes Écrans Juniors Prize, alongside nominations for two BIFAs. The film screened internationally and secured worldwide distribution.

A committed advocate for underrepresented talent, Rebekah has mentored for BFNetwork, served on the BAFTA short film jury, and is an alumna of Network@LFF, Edinburgh Talent Lab, BIFA Springboard, Screen Yorkshire Flex and Breaking Through the Lens along with being nominated for The Academy Gold Fellowship.

 

She also works extensively with young disabled actors, preparing them for sustainable careers both in front of and behind the camera.

Rebekah has just completed her second feature, Learning to Breathe Under Water, produced by Jack Tarling (God’s Own Country, Kneecap) and Bankside Films. Selected for Cannes’ Great 8showcase, featured on The Brit List, and nominated for the VFF Talent Award at Berlinale, the film stars BAFTA-nominated Rory Kinnear and Oscar-nominated Maria Bakalova, and began its festival run at Karlovy Vary along with winning the audience award at Galway Film Fleadh.

Her sci-fi thriller Arkadia won JETS 2026, marking a bold step into genre filmmaking. She has also been selected for the BFI’s D-Horror Genre Lab to develop her new feature The turning. Together, these projects signal an exciting move further into elevated genre — blending psychological depth, social perspective and cinematic ambition through her distinct and inclusive lens.
